Shock, horror, disbelief even a full-blown acute stress reaction, and sometimes posttraumatic stress disorder can result," explains physician mentor, Barry Bub, M.D., on his way to the 2004 Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in New York City, carrying a heavy case of river stones that will be used in his workshop, "The Trauma of Medical Mistakes: An Experiential Workshop."

FINDINGS FROM FIRST SURVEY ON VOLUNTEERISM BY UNITED STATES SURGEONS SHOW HOW SURGEONS PARTICIPATE IN MORE THAN 250 ORGANIZATIONS

The first survey to examine the nature and extent of volunteerism among surgeons in the United States has found that surgeons actively participate in more than 250 volunteer organizations in- and outside the country. "There are many types of medical volunteer organizations, but until now, no one has looked at the surgical piece of that. We learned about amazing volunteer programs in inner city and rural areas, Central America and Africa," according to Andrew Warshaw, MD, FACS, surgeon-in-chief at Massachusetts General Hospital, and chair of the Socioeconomic Issues Committee of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. Findings from the survey were discussed at the 2003 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons.

By the age of sixty, about one third of all North American women have had a hysterectomy, and they are often encouraged to surrender their ovaries at the same time. Most of these procedures are elective, agreed to by women whose doctors said that the uterus and/or the ovaries have no value beyond reproduction, and that the lost hormones can be replaced artificially. Doctors would not recommend the removal of a male patient's testicles once his family was complete, so why do we continue to subject women to unnecessary castration?
